The LM393DR from Texas Instruments is the industry-standard dual differential comparator operating from 2V to 36V single supply. It features low 2 mV input offset voltage, open-collector outputs for wired-OR and level shifting, and input common mode range that includes ground. With 1.3 µs response time and 16 mA output sink capability, it is ideal for voltage monitoring, threshold detection, and oscillator circuits.

The LM393DR contains two independent voltage comparators. Each comparator continuously compares the voltages at its inverting and non-inverting inputs. When the non-inverting input exceeds the inverting input, the open-collector output transistor turns off (output goes HIGH via external pull-up). When the inverting input exceeds the non-inverting, the output transistor turns on (output goes LOW). The open-collector output allows the comparator to interface with different voltage domains — the pull-up resistor can be connected to a voltage up to 36V independent of the supply voltage. The 1.3 µs response time enables detection of moderate-frequency signals.
