The 74HC00N from Texas Instruments is a quad 2-input NAND gate in 14-PDIP. As the fundamental universal logic gate, NAND gates can implement any Boolean function. Operating from 2V to 6V at up to 52MHz, it is the most basic building block of digital logic design.

The 74HC00N from Texas Instruments contains four independent 2-input NAND gates in a 14-PDIP package. The NAND gate is the universal logic element: any Boolean function can be implemented using only NAND gates. The 74HC00N operates from 2V to 6V, making it compatible with 3.3V and 5V logic systems. The 9ns typical propagation delay at 4.5V supports clock frequencies up to 52MHz. CMOS inputs draw negligible current (+/-1uA maximum), allowing large fan-out. The outputs can drive up to 10 LSTTL loads. The 74HC00N is pin-compatible with the older 74LS00 TTL version, enabling direct upgrades for lower power consumption. It is the most fundamental and widely used logic IC in digital design education and prototyping.

Each NAND gate in the 74HC00N implements the Boolean function Y = NOT(A AND B). The output is LOW only when both inputs are HIGH; for all other input combinations, the output is HIGH. This truth table makes NAND a universal gate: an inverter is created by tying both inputs together, an AND gate by inverting the output, and an OR gate by inverting both inputs before a NAND. The CMOS implementation uses complementary N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs in a push-pull output configuration. The input stage uses a standard CMOS inverter with ESD protection diodes. The 74HC family uses buffered outputs (two cascaded inverters) for sharp switching and noise immunity. The quiescent current is essentially zero (only leakage), with power consumption proportional to switching frequency.
