The IRF840PBF is a classic N-channel enhancement-mode power MOSFET from the Infineon HEXFET family. With 500V drain-source rating and 8A continuous current, it is a workhorse device in off-line SMPS, motor drives, and power conversion systems. The 0.85 Ohm on-resistance and 63nC gate charge suit moderate-frequency switching. TO-220AB package provides 125W dissipation when heatsinked.

The IRF840PBF operates as a voltage-controlled N-channel MOSFET. (1) Off: No channel exists when VGS is below threshold, blocking up to 500V. (2) On: VGS above threshold creates inversion layer, RDS(on) = 0.85 Ohm max. (3) Switching: Qg=63nC must be supplied/removed for transitions. (4) Avalanche: Fully rated to absorb inductive kickback energy without external clamping.
