The ESD5B5.0ST1G is a 5V unidirectional TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode from onsemi in SOD-523 (1.2×0.8mm), designed for ESD protection of high-speed data lines. It uses a zener-based clamp structure: under normal operation (0-5V), the diode presents very low leakage current (<1uA at 5V) and low capacitance (70pF typical). When an ESD strike occurs (up to +/-8kV contact per IEC 61000-4-2), the TVS diode avalanches and clamps the voltage to a safe level. The clamping voltage at 8kV ESD (30A peak) is typically 9.8V, low enough to protect 5V CMOS inputs. The unidirectional configuration means the diode only clamps positive transients to the GND rail (and negative transients are clamped by the forward diode to -0.8V). Bidirectional versions clamp both polarities symmetrically. The 70pF capacitance is low enough for data rates up to approximately 50Mbps (e.g., RS-485, CAN) but too high for high-speed interfaces like USB 3.0 or HDMI, which require <1pF. The SOD-523 package has parasitic inductance of approximately 0.5nH, contributing to approximately 3V overshoot during fast ESD rise times (0.7-1ns). For better protection, place the TVS as close as possible to the connector.
