The CY8CMBR3116-LQXI from Infineon is a CapSense Express capacitive touch sensing controller providing 16 capacitive sensing channels and 2 proximity sensing channels. The device features Infineon’s SmartSense auto-tuning algorithm that automatically compensates for environmental changes such as temperature, humidity, and PCB variations without requiring manual tuning. The I2C interface enables host MCU configuration and status reading. With no external components required for touch sensing, the device simplifies PCB layout and reduces BOM cost. The 15 uA sleep mode current supports battery-powered applications.

The CY8CMBR3116-LQXI uses a capacitive sensing method based on delta-sigma modulation. Each CapSense input is connected to a switched-capacitor circuit that measures the capacitance change when a finger approaches or touches the sensor pad. The SmartSense auto-tuning algorithm continuously monitors baseline capacitance and adjusts detection thresholds to compensate for environmental drift. When a touch or proximity event is detected, the corresponding status register bit is updated and can be read by the host MCU via I2C. The device supports multiple widget types including buttons, sliders, and proximity sensors. The proximity channels provide extended detection range for hand-sweep gestures. In sleep mode, the device periodically scans sensors at a reduced rate to conserve power while maintaining responsiveness.
