The 40TPS12A from Vishay is a high-voltage phase control SCR designed for medium power switching and phase control applications. With a 1200 V repetitive peak off-state voltage rating and 55 A RMS on-state current, it is suitable for demanding industrial power control. The device uses glass passivation technology that provides reliable operation up to 125°C junction temperature. The TO-247AC package enables efficient thermal management with low thermal resistance, making it ideal for applications requiring high power dissipation in a compact footprint.

The 40TPS12A is a three-terminal semiconductor device (anode, cathode, gate) that operates as a latch. In the off-state, the SCR blocks forward voltage between anode and cathode. When a positive gate current above the trigger threshold (200 mA max) is applied, the internal NPN-PNP regenerative feedback loop is activated, causing the device to latch on. Once latched, the gate loses control and the SCR remains conducting until the anode current falls below the holding current. The device returns to the blocking state when the current crosses zero during AC operation. Phase control is achieved by varying the gate trigger timing relative to the AC zero crossing, thereby controlling the conduction angle and average power delivered to the load.
