The MCP1702T-3302E/MB from Microchip Technology is a 250mA low-dropout positive voltage regulator with a fixed 3.3V output in a SOT-89 package. The 3302 in the part number indicates 3.3V output voltage. The device features an ultra-low quiescent current of only 2.0uA typical, making it ideal for battery-powered applications where standby current must be minimized. The 725mV typical dropout voltage at full 250mA load allows operation from a single Li-Ion cell or 3.6V battery. The input voltage range extends to 13.2V (maximum), though the maximum input for the 3.3V version is limited to 6.0V by the power dissipation constraints. The device includes short-circuit current limiting and over-temperature shutdown protection. No external capacitors are required for stability, though a 1uF output capacitor improves transient response. The SOT-89 package provides better thermal performance than SOT-23 for applications approaching the 250mA current limit.

The MCP1702T-3302E/MB is a PNP pass transistor based LDO regulator. The input voltage feeds the emitter of the PNP pass transistor, whose collector provides the regulated output. An error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (via an internal resistor divider for the fixed 3.3V version) with an internal 1.2V bandgap reference. The error amplifier drives the base of the PNP pass transistor to maintain the output at 3.3V. The PNP topology allows the dropout voltage to be only VCE(sat) of the pass transistor, typically 725mV at 250mA. The 2.0uA quiescent current is achieved by biasing the error amplifier and reference at very low currents. The short-circuit protection monitors the output current by sensing the voltage across an internal sense resistor in the pass transistor emitter. When the current exceeds approximately 350mA, the base drive is reduced to limit the output current. The over-temperature protection senses the die temperature and shuts down the pass transistor when it exceeds approximately 150C.
