The TPS70933DBVR from Texas Instruments is a 150mA, 3.3V fixed-output ultra-low quiescent current LDO voltage regulator in a SOT-23-5 package. The 1uA typical quiescent current makes this device ideal for always-on battery-powered systems where standby power consumption must be minimized. The 150nA typical shutdown current when the EN pin is pulled low further extends battery life during system sleep modes. The wide 2.7V to 30V input voltage range supports direct operation from single-cell Li-Ion batteries (2.7V minimum) through multi-cell packs and automotive 12V/24V supplies. The reverse current protection feature prevents current from flowing from the output back to the input when the input voltage drops below the output voltage, eliminating the need for an external blocking diode. The PMOS pass transistor topology provides the low 300mV typical dropout voltage at 150mA output. The 80dB PSRR at low frequency (10Hz to 1kHz) ensures a clean output supply for noise-sensitive RF and precision analog circuits. The device is stable with small ceramic output capacitors (1.5uF minimum for VOUT >= 1.5V). Internal protection features include current limiting and thermal shutdown.

The TPS70933DBVR uses a PMOS pass transistor LDO topology with reverse current protection. (1) PMOS Pass Element: The P-channel MOSFET connects between input and output. The PMOS device provides low dropout operation because the gate drive only needs to exceed the threshold voltage, not the output voltage as in NPN-pass regulators. The dropout voltage is approximately RDS(ON) x IOUT. (2) Ultra-Low IQ: The internal bias circuit is designed to consume only 1uA of ground pin current at no load. The precision bandgap reference and error amplifier are optimized for low power consumption while maintaining 2% output voltage accuracy over temperature. (3) Reverse Current Protection: An internal comparator monitors the input-to-output voltage differential. When the output voltage exceeds the input voltage (which would forward-bias the PMOS body diode), the reverse current protection circuit turns off the pass transistor, preventing current flow from output to input. This eliminates the need for an external blocking diode in battery backup applications. (4) Enable and Shutdown: When the EN pin is pulled below the threshold (0.4V typical), the device enters shutdown mode, turning off the pass transistor and reducing the supply current to 150nA. Floating or pulling EN high enables normal operation. (5) Current Limit: Internal current limiting activates at approximately 200mA, protecting the device during fault conditions.
