The TPS54060ADGQ from Texas Instruments is a 60V, 0.5A step-down DC/DC buck converter with an integrated 200mOhm high-side N-channel MOSFET in an HVSSOP-10 PowerPAD package. The device implements constant-frequency current-mode control which reduces output capacitance and simplifies external frequency compensation design. The wide switching frequency range of 100kHz to 2.5MHz allows for efficiency and size optimization when selecting output filter components. The switching frequency is set by an external resistor on the RT/CLK pin, which also supports external clock synchronization via an internal PLL. The Eco-Mode pulse-skipping feature reduces the operating quiescent current to 116uA at no load, while shutdown current is only 1.3uA. The EN pin with internal pull-up current source allows adjustable input undervoltage lockout (UVLO) with two external resistors. The SS/TR pin provides programmable slow-start and power supply tracking/sequencing. The open-drain PWRGD output indicates when the output voltage is within the UV/OV window (93% to 107% of nominal). Internal protection features include frequency foldback during startup and overcurrent, thermal shutdown, and overvoltage protection.

The TPS54060ADGQ uses a current-mode buck converter topology. (1) Power Stage: The integrated 200mOhm high-side N-channel MOSFET switches the input voltage to the output inductor. A bootstrap capacitor between BOOT and PH provides the gate drive voltage for the high-side MOSFET. (2) Current-Mode Control: The error amplifier compares the output voltage (sensed at VSENSE) with the internal 0.8V reference. The error amplifier output (COMP) sets the current comparator threshold. The switch current is sensed and compared to this threshold to determine the on-time. Current-mode control provides cycle-by-cycle current limiting and simplifies loop compensation. (3) Eco-Mode: At light loads, the device enters pulse-skipping mode where the MOSFET is turned on only when the output voltage falls below the regulation threshold, reducing switching losses and quiescent current. (4) Frequency Foldback: During startup and overcurrent conditions, the switching frequency is reduced to help control the inductor current. (5) Protection: Thermal shutdown disables the converter when the junction temperature exceeds the threshold, and restarts after cooling.
