The device features a manganese dioxide (MnO2) cathode system providing self-healing characteristics and reliable operation under DC bias conditions. The 10% capacitance tolerance (K suffix) enables precise filtering and timing applications where tighter tolerance is required than the standard 20% grade. The 6.5 Ohm typical ESR and 107mA ripple current rating make this capacitor suitable for DC/DC converter and LDO output filtering in low-to-moderate current power supplies. The 16V rated voltage provides adequate margin for 5V and 3.3V rail filtering applications. All TAJ series capacitors are 100% surge current tested to ensure reliable performance during power-up inrush events. The TAJA225K016RNJ is a solid tantalum electrolytic capacitor using manganese dioxide cathode technology. (1) Anode: The tantalum metal is sintered into a porous pellet that forms the anode. The large surface area of the porous structure provides high capacitance in a small volume. (2) Dielectric: A thin layer of tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) is grown electrochemically on the anode surface. This oxide layer serves as the dielectric, with a dielectric constant of approximately 27 and breakdown strength of about 1.5V/nm. The 16V rating requires an oxide thickness of approximately 20nm. (3) Cathode: Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is deposited over the oxide layer to serve as the solid electrolyte cathode. The MnO2 provides the electrical connection to the counter electrode and contributes to the self-healing behavior. (4) Self-Healing: If a localized defect in the oxide causes a leakage current, the resulting localized heating converts MnO2 to Mn2O3 (a lower-valence oxide with higher resistance), effectively isolating the defect and restoring low leakage current. (5) Surge Current: During initial power application, the capacitor can experience high inrush current. The 100% surge current testing ensures each unit can withstand the rated surge without failure.
