The ADXL345BCCZ from Analog Devices is a small, thin, low-power 3-axis accelerometer with high-resolution (16-bit) measurement at up to +/-16g. Digital output data is formatted as 16-bit twos complement and is accessible through SPI or I2C digital interfaces. The ADXL345 is well-suited for mobile device applications, measuring static acceleration of gravity in tilt-sensing applications as well as dynamic acceleration resulting from motion or shock. Its high resolution enables measurement of inclination changes less than 1.0 degree. Built-in motion detection features include activity/inactivity sensing, tap/double-tap detection, and free-fall detection, all of which can be mapped to either of two interrupt pins.

The ADXL345 uses a polysilicon surface-micromachined sensor structure built on top of a silicon wafer. The sensor structure consists of a proof mass suspended by polysilicon springs. Acceleration causes the proof mass to deflect, changing the capacitance between the proof mass and fixed electrodes. The change in capacitance is measured by an on-chip ASIC that converts it to a proportional voltage, digitized by a 16-bit ADC. The digital filter provides bandwidth selection from 0.1Hz to 1600Hz. The built-in FIFO stores up to 32 samples, reducing host processor interrupt overhead. The activity/inactivity, tap, and free-fall detection functions are computed by comparing acceleration data against programmable thresholds.
