The LT1963AES8 from Analog Devices is a 1.5A adjustable low-dropout linear regulator featuring the same core architecture as the LT1764A family in a lower-current, smaller SOIC-8 package. The adjustable output is set by two external resistors dividing the output voltage down to the 1.21V feedback threshold. The 340mV dropout voltage at 1.5A enables efficient regulation from supplies just slightly above the output voltage. The 40µVRMS output noise makes it suitable for powering noise-sensitive RF and analog circuits. The ES8 suffix indicates the Narrow SOIC-8 package rated for the -40°C to 125°C temperature range. This device is ideal for applications needing 1.5A or less where the D2PAK package of the LT1764A is unnecessarily large.

The LT1963AES8 uses a PNP pass transistor in a common-emitter configuration, where the dropout voltage is defined by the VCE(sat) of the pass element. The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (from the ADJ pin) with the internal 1.21V bandgap reference, driving the base of the PNP pass transistor to maintain the output voltage. The output voltage is programmed by a resistor divider from OUT to ADJ to GND: VOUT = 1.21V × (1 + R1/R2). A noise bypass capacitor on the ADJ pin (or the internal NR pin in fixed versions) filters the bandgap reference noise, achieving 40µVRMS output noise. The controlled quiescent current architecture ensures the 1mA operating current remains stable even when the input voltage drops below the regulation threshold. The SHDN pin disables the device, reducing current to <1µA.

The LT1963AES8 is commonly used as a post-regulator after a switching converter in RF systems, where the 40µVRMS noise eliminates switching ripple from the supply. For adjustable power supplies, the external resistor divider allows any output from 1.21V to 20V. In battery-powered instruments, the <1µA shutdown current preserves battery life. The SOIC-8 package is well-suited for space-constrained PCB layouts where the D2PAK is too large. Multiple LT1963AES8 devices can provide different voltage rails from a common input supply.
