The MAX13054ESA+T from Analog Devices is a high-speed Controller Area Network (CAN) transceiver with extended ±80V fault protection, significantly exceeding the standard ISO 11898 requirement. A unique feature is the separate VCC2 supply pin that allows direct interface with 3.3V microcontrollers without level shifting. The transceiver supports data rates up to 1 Mbps and includes a TXD dominant timeout function that prevents a faulty CAN controller from permanently locking the bus. The device is pin-for-pin compatible with the MAX13050/52/53 family, offering design flexibility.

The MAX13054ESA+T bridges the CAN protocol controller (typically an MCU with a CAN controller peripheral) and the physical differential bus. The TXD input receives serialized data from the CAN controller at 3.3V logic levels (via VCC2), and the driver converts this to differential signals on CANH and CANL at 5V levels. The receiver monitors the bus differential voltage and presents the decoded data to the MCU via the RXD output at VCC2 logic levels. The ±80V fault protection is achieved through specialized input structures that can withstand overvoltage conditions without damage. The TXD dominant timeout circuit monitors the TXD input; if it remains low for more than 1 ms (indicating a stuck controller), the driver is disabled to prevent bus lockup. Thermal shutdown activates at approximately 160°C junction temperature.
