The ADUM1201ARZ from Analog Devices is a dual-channel digital isolator using iCoupler technology in SOIC-8 wide-body package. The device provides 2500V rms isolation with 25Mbps maximum data rate and 30ns propagation delay. The two channels are arranged as one forward (side 1 to side 2) and one reverse (side 2 to side 1), ideal for full-duplex communication isolation. The iCoupler technology uses chip-scale transformers fabricated in a planar process, eliminating the LED and photodetector degradation issues of traditional optocouplers. The DC-correct design ensures the output defaults high if either side loses power, providing fail-safe operation. The ARZ suffix denotes SOIC-8 wide body with tape and reel.

The ADUM1201ARZ operates as a dual-channel digital isolator using iCoupler magnetic coupling technology. (1) The iCoupler technology uses on-chip planar transformers fabricated in a CMOS process. Data is encoded on the transmit side using a modulation scheme that creates alternating magnetic fields in the transformer primary. The secondary coil detects the magnetic field and decodes the data. The polyimide insulation layer between primary and secondary coils provides the galvanic isolation barrier rated at 2500V rms. (2) The encoding scheme is DC-correct: the transmitter sends a pulse for each input edge (rising and falling). At the receiver, a pulse on the transformer secondary sets or resets the output latch. If the input is static (no transitions), a periodic refresh signal maintains the correct output state. If power is lost on either side, the refresh signal stops and the output defaults to high (fail-safe). This DC correctness is critical for applications where the isolated signal may be static for extended periods. (3) The 25kV/us common-mode transient immunity is achieved by the differential transformer structure and careful layout of the isolation barrier. Fast common-mode transients (such as those generated by IGBT switching in motor drives) couple equally to both sides of the differential receiver and are rejected. This is significantly better than optocouplers, which can produce false outputs during fast transients due to LED parasitic capacitance.
