The TLV1117LV33DCYR from Texas Instruments is a 1A low-dropout linear regulator with 3.3V fixed output in SOT-223 package. The 300mV maximum dropout at full load enables efficient 5V-to-3.3V conversion. The 500uA quiescent current is significantly lower than legacy 1117 devices (5-10mA), reducing power waste in always-on applications. The device is stable with just 10uF ceramic output capacitance. Pin-compatible with AMS1117 and other standard 1117 LDOs, enabling easy upgrades.

The TLV1117LV33DCYR operates as a low-dropout linear regulator. (1) The PNP pass transistor provides the low 300mV dropout characteristic at 1A. The error amplifier compares the output voltage with an internal bandgap reference and adjusts the pass transistor drive to maintain regulation. The +/-1.5% output accuracy ensures reliable 3.3V logic levels. (2) The 500uA quiescent current is a major improvement over legacy 1117 devices that draw 5-10mA. This reduces power dissipation in battery-powered and always-on applications. The quiescent current is relatively constant across load, simplifying thermal design. (3) The device is stable with just 10uF ceramic output capacitance, eliminating the need for expensive tantalum capacitors. Internal current limiting protects against overload (1.5A typical), and thermal shutdown activates at 165C. The SOT-223 package provides a good thermal path with 15C/W junction-to-case thermal resistance.
