The 23LC1024-I/ST from Microchip Technology is a 1Mbit (128 Kbyte) serial SRAM with SPI and Quad SPI (SQI) interfaces in a TSSOP-8 package. Unlike flash memory or EEPROM, SRAM provides unlimited read/write endurance with no wear mechanism, making it ideal for frequently updated data buffers and working memory. The device supports three interface modes: standard SPI (SDI, single data in), and Quad SPI (SQI, four data lines) for 4x throughput. The 20 MHz SPI clock provides up to 20 Mbit/s throughput in SDI mode, while SQI mode achieves 80 Mbit/s effective data rate at 20 MHz clock. The sequential read/write mode allows continuous access to the entire memory array with a single address, ideal for circular buffers and DMA transfers. The 2.5V to 5.5V supply range supports both 3.3V and 5V systems. The 5 uA standby current is suitable for battery-backed applications.

The 23LC1024 uses a 6-transistor SRAM cell array organized as 131,072 x 8 bits. The memory is accessed through an SPI-compatible serial interface using standard command opcodes: READ (0x03), WRITE (0x02), EDIO (0x3B) for SDI mode, and EQIO (0x38) for SQI mode. In SPI mode, the master sends an 8-bit opcode followed by a 24-bit address (only lower 17 bits used), then reads or writes data. Sequential mode allows continuous read/write without re-issuing the address – the internal address counter auto-increments and wraps around at the memory boundary. In SQI mode, data is transferred on all four I/O pins simultaneously, quadrupling the effective throughput. The SRAM cells use a bistable flip-flop structure that retains data as long as power is applied, with no refresh requirement (unlike DRAM). The unlimited endurance is inherent to SRAM – the read and write operations are non-destructive and don’t involve charge movement through oxide layers.
