The AD7891YSZ-1 from Analog Devices is a complete 8-channel 12-bit data acquisition system in a 44-pin MQFP package. The -1 suffix indicates the +/-10V analog input range version (-2 provides +/-2.5V range). The SAR ADC uses a capacitive DAC and a high-speed comparator to determine each bit from MSB to LSB: the DAC output is compared with the held input voltage, and each bit is resolved in one clock cycle (12 cycles total). The 1.68us conversion time plus 0.32us acquisition time yields the 500kSPS throughput. The +/-10V input range is accommodated by an internal resistor divider that scales the input to the +/-5V range of the ADC core. The internal +2.5V reference provides the ADC reference voltage, or an external reference can be applied via the VREF pin for higher accuracy. The parallel interface provides 12-bit data in one read cycle (12-bit bus) or two read cycles (8-bit bus), while the serial interface shifts out data MSB-first compatible with SPI peripherals.
