The HIP4082IBZ from Renesas Electronics (formerly Intersil) is an 80V full-bridge N-channel MOSFET driver in an SOIC-16 surface-mount package. The device independently drives four N-channel MOSFETs in full-bridge (H-bridge) or dual half-bridge configurations. Unlike the higher-drive HIP4081, the HIP4082 has reduced output current (1.25A peak vs. 2.5A) which allows the smaller SOIC-16 package and makes it suitable for moderate-power applications with MOSFETs up to approximately 50A ID. The bootstrap-based high-side drive eliminates the need for a charge pump, simplifying the external circuit. Each high-side driver is powered by a bootstrap capacitor charged during the low-side on-time. The programmable dead time (0.1us to 4.5us) prevents shoot-through by ensuring both high-side and low-side MOSFETs in the same half-bridge are never on simultaneously. The DIS (disable) pin turns off all four outputs and actively refreshes the bootstrap capacitors by briefly turning on the low-side MOSFETs, ensuring the bootstrap capacitors are charged before the next PWM cycle. The shoot-through protection logic prevents invalid input combinations from causing cross-conduction. The input logic thresholds (VIL=1V, VIH=2.5V) are compatible with both 5V logic and higher-voltage control circuits.

The HIP4082IBZ consists of four gate driver channels (two high-side, two low-side) with control logic for shoot-through protection and dead-time generation. The input pins (AL, AH, BL, BH) control the four MOSFET gate outputs (AHO, ALO, BHO, BLO). The control logic ensures that complementary outputs (AHO/ALO and BHO/BLO) are never simultaneously active, preventing shoot-through current. When an input transitions, the previously active output is turned off, and after the programmed dead time expires, the complementary output is turned on. The dead time is programmed by an external resistor connected between the HDEL/LDEL pins and VDD, setting the delay for high-side and low-side transitions respectively. The high-side drivers use bootstrap circuitry: when the low-side MOSFET is on, the SW node is near ground, and the bootstrap capacitor charges through the internal bootstrap diode from VDD. When the high-side MOSFET needs to turn on, the charge stored in the bootstrap capacitor provides the gate drive voltage above the SW node. The HIP4082 does not include an internal charge pump, so the bootstrap capacitors must be periodically refreshed by turning on the low-side MOSFETs. The DIS pin, when pulled low, disables all four outputs and activates a bootstrap refresh cycle by briefly turning on both low-side MOSFETs, charging the bootstrap capacitors to VDD minus the diode drop.
