The ULN2803APG is an 8-channel Darlington transistor array manufactured by Toshiba, designed for high-current switching applications. Each of the eight channels consists of a Darlington-connected NPN transistor pair with integral suppression diodes. The device can sink up to 500mA per channel at voltages up to 50V. Inputs are compatible with TTL and 5V CMOS logic levels, requiring only 2.4V to turn on. The high current gain (minimum 1000) ensures that logic-level input currents are sufficient to drive high-current loads. The integral clamp diodes protect against back-EMF when switching inductive loads such as relays and solenoids.

Each ULN2803 channel contains a Darlington pair — two NPN transistors connected so that the emitter current of the first drives the base of the second, multiplying current gain. When a logic-high signal (above 2.4V) is applied to an input pin, the Darlington pair turns on, sinking current through the load connected between the positive supply and the output pin. The output saturates at approximately 1.1V at 350mA load current. Each output pin includes a clamp diode connected to a common COM pin; when the inductive load generates back-EMF during turn-off, the diode provides a current path, dissipating the energy safely. The COM pin should be connected to the load supply voltage for proper diode clamping.

  • Stepper Motor Driver: Use two ULN2803 channels per winding (4 channels for a unipolar stepper). Connect the motor windings between the supply and output pins. The integral clamp diodes protect against back-EMF during winding commutation. Drive inputs from a microcontroller’s GPIO pins.
  • Relay Bank Driver: Drive up to 8 relays from a single ULN2803. Connect each relay coil between the relay supply and an output pin. The clamp diodes eliminate the need for external flyback diodes. The 500mA per channel rating supports most signal and power relays.
  • LED Matrix Display: Sink current through LED columns or rows in multiplexed displays. The 500mA rating allows driving multiple LEDs per channel. The TTL-compatible inputs connect directly to MCU I/O ports.
