The TJA1042T/1J from NXP is a third-generation high-speed CAN FD transceiver in SOIC-8. It supports CAN FD fast phase data rates up to 5Mbps and complies with ISO 11898-2:2016 and SAE J2284. The device features ultra-low current standby mode with bus wake-up capability, +/-58V high-voltage robustness on CAN pins, and +/-8kV ESD protection. The /1J suffix denotes the specific version with SPLIT voltage output for bus biasing. AEC-Q100 qualified for automotive applications. Status: NRND (Not Recommended for New Designs).

The TJA1042T/1J operates as a CAN physical layer transceiver. (1) In normal mode, the transmitter converts the TXD logic signal from the MCU CAN controller into differential CAN bus signals on CANH and CANL. The receiver converts differential bus signals back to RXD logic levels for the MCU. The 5Mbps data rate supports CAN FD fast phase. (2) The standby mode reduces supply current to micro-power levels while monitoring the CAN bus for wake-up patterns. When a valid wake-up is detected, the INH output activates an external voltage regulator to power up the ECU. (3) The SPLIT output provides a DC bias at VCC/2 for stabilizing the recessive bus level, particularly important in networks with bus termination issues. The +/-58V high-voltage robustness protects against automotive load dump and jump-start conditions.
