The onsemi SS23 is a surface-mount Schottky barrier rectifier from the SS23-S210 series, rated at 30V reverse voltage and 2.0A average forward current. Housed in an SMB (DO-214AA) package, the device uses glass-passivated junction technology and a clip-bonded leg structure that provides high thermal performance and low electrical resistance. The Schottky construction offers several key advantages over standard PN junction rectifiers: extremely low forward voltage drop of 500 mV at rated current, zero reverse recovery time for high-frequency operation, and low power loss for improved efficiency. The device achieves a high surge current rating of 50A (8.3 ms half-sine wave) and operates over the full -65°C to +125°C junction temperature range. The SS23 is Pb-Free, Halogen Free, and RoHS compliant.

The SS23 operates as a Schottky barrier rectifier using a metal-semiconductor junction (typically platinum or molybdenum on N-type silicon) rather than a conventional PN junction. In forward bias, majority carriers (electrons) cross the metal-semiconductor barrier, conducting current with a low forward voltage drop of 500 mV at 2A. Because conduction is via majority carriers only, there is no minority carrier storage — the diode switches off almost instantly with zero reverse recovery time (trr ≈ 0), making it ideal for high-frequency switching applications. In reverse bias, a small leakage current of 0.4 mA flows at 25°C (increasing to 10 mA at 100°C) due to thermionic emission over the barrier. The glass-passivated junction provides edge termination protection, ensuring stable breakdown characteristics and preventing premature failure at the junction periphery. The clip-bonded internal construction reduces parasitic resistance and improves thermal dissipation compared to traditional wire-bonded packages. The 50A surge current rating allows the device to withstand transient overcurrent events without damage.
