The SP3222EUEY-L/TR is a 2-driver/2-receiver RS-232 transceiver from MaxLinear designed for portable and handheld applications. It operates from a single 3.0V to 5.5V supply using an integrated high-efficiency charge pump that requires only four 0.1µF external capacitors. The device supports data rates up to 1000kbps for high-speed RS-232 communication. The SP3222EU variant includes a low-power shutdown mode that reduces supply current to less than 1µA while keeping receivers active for wake-up detection. Enhanced ESD protection of ±15kV (HBM and IEC Air) and ±8kV (IEC Contact) on RS-232 pins provides robust field reliability.

The SP3222EUEY-L/TR uses a patented four-phase charge pump to generate ±5.5V supplies from a single 3.0V to 5.5V Vcc input, enabling true RS-232 output levels without dual supplies. The charge pump operates discontinuously, enabling when output voltages fall below 5.5V magnitude and disabling when above, minimizing power consumption. Drivers convert TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 compliant output levels with slew rate control for low EMI. Receivers convert RS-232 input levels back to TTL/CMOS with 300mV hysteresis for noise immunity on long cables. Internal 5kΩ pulldown resistors on receiver inputs ensure a defined HIGH output when inputs are floating. The SHDN pin disables drivers and charge pump for 1µA standby, while EN pin tri-states receiver outputs independently.
