The SFH6156-2T from Vishay Semiconductors is a high-reliability optocoupler with phototransistor output, designed for signal transmission between two electrically separated circuits. It features a GaAs infrared diode emitter optically coupled to a silicon planar phototransistor detector in a compact 4-pin SMD gull-wing package. The device provides 5300 VRMS isolation voltage with creepage and clearance distances of at least 7 mm, meeting stringent safety requirements. The -2T variant offers a CTR range of 63% to 125% at 10 mA forward current, making it suitable for a wide range of signal coupling applications. The optocoupler exhibits excellent CTR linearity, fast switching times of 2 us, and low CTR degradation over its operational lifetime. It carries multiple agency approvals including UL1577, cUL, BSI, and FIMKO, with VDE 0884-5 available on option variants.

The SFH6156-2T operates through two electrically isolated sections: (1) The emitter section contains a GaAs infrared LED that converts forward current into infrared radiation at approximately 950 nm wavelength. The LED is driven by the input signal with a typical forward voltage of 1.65 V at 10 mA. (2) The detector section contains a silicon planar phototransistor that receives the infrared radiation through the optically transparent isolation barrier. The photogenerated base current is amplified by the transistor beta, producing the output collector current. The CTR of 63-125% represents the ratio of output collector current to input LED current. (3) The isolation barrier provides galvanic separation rated at 5300 VRMS for 1 second, with a minimum creepage and clearance distance of 7 mm. The coupling capacitance between emitter and detector is very low, minimizing capacitive noise coupling. (4) The phototransistor operates in common-emitter configuration with a maximum collector-emitter voltage of 70 V, providing adequate voltage margin for most isolated interface applications.
