The MAX485ECSA+ from Maxim Integrated (now part of Analog Devices) is a low-power RS-485/RS-422 transceiver with ±15 kV ESD protection on driver outputs and receiver inputs. Operating from a single 5 V supply, it supports data rates up to 2.5 Mbps in half-duplex configuration. The device features driver enable (DE) and receiver enable (/RE) pins for flexible bus control, current limiting and thermal shutdown for driver overload protection, and a wide -7 V to +12 V common-mode input range for robust operation in noisy industrial environments.

The MAX485ECSA+ integrates a differential driver and a differential receiver on a single chip, sharing the bus pins (A and B) for half-duplex communication. The driver converts TTL/CMOS logic levels at the DI input into differential signals on the A and B bus lines. The receiver converts differential signals from the bus back to single-ended logic at the RO output. The DE (driver enable) and /RE (receiver enable) pins control the direction of data flow: when DE is high and /RE is low, the device transmits; when DE is low and /RE is low, the device receives. Both the driver and receiver enter high-impedance states when disabled, allowing multiple transceivers to share the same bus. The ±15 kV ESD protection is implemented through on-chip transient voltage suppression structures on all bus-facing pins.
