The MAX485CSA+ is an Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) low-power RS-485/RS-422 transceiver in an 8-pin narrow SOIC package. The device contains one differential driver and one differential receiver, configured for half-duplex communication on a shared RS-485 bus. The 5V single-supply operation and 2.5Mbps maximum data rate make it one of the most widely used RS-485 transceivers for industrial communication. The driver output enables (DE) and receiver output enables (RE) allow independent control of the driver and receiver, enabling half-duplex operation with direction control. The -7V to +12V common-mode input range exceeds the RS-485 specification, providing robustness in noisy industrial environments. The fail-safe receiver feature ensures the receiver output is high when the bus inputs are open (floating), preventing erroneous data reception on unoccupied buses. The driver includes short-circuit current limiting and thermal shutdown protection.

The MAX485CSA+ converts TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-485 differential signaling. The driver takes single-ended data from the DI (driver input) pin and drives complementary signals on the A and B bus outputs when DE is high. When DI is high, the driver makes A higher than B (differential positive); when DI is low, B is higher than A (differential negative). The receiver senses the differential voltage between A and B when RE is low. If A exceeds B by at least 200mV, the receiver output (RO) is high; if B exceeds A by 200mV, RO is low. The fail-safe feature ensures RO is high when the inputs are open, shorted, or terminated but not driven. For half-duplex operation, the DE and RE pins are typically connected together so that the device is either transmitting (DE=RE=high) or receiving (DE=RE=low). The driver and receiver three-state outputs are in high-impedance when disabled, allowing multiple transceivers to share the bus.
