The AWM3100V from Honeywell is a microbridge mass airflow sensor from the AWM3000 series, designed for measuring gas flow rates from 0 to 200 standard cubic centimeters per minute (sccm). The sensor uses Honeywell’s microbridge thermal flow sensing technology, where a micro-machined silicon chip contains a heated element and two thermopile sensors arranged upstream and downstream of the heating element. As gas flows over the chip, it carries heat from the upstream sensor to the downstream sensor, creating a differential temperature proportional to the mass flow rate. The built-in signal conditioning circuitry provides a linear 1-5V analog output proportional to flow rate, with 1V corresponding to zero flow and 5V corresponding to 200 sccm full scale. The integrated temperature compensation ensures stable output over the -25 to +85C operating range, eliminating the need for external temperature correction. The 1ms response time enables real-time flow monitoring and control in dynamic applications such as medical ventilation. The sensor is calibrated for air and nitrogen at standard conditions (25C, 101.3kPa), and correction factors are available for other clean, dry gases. The AWM3100V is not bidirectional; for bidirectional flow measurement, the AWM3200V (-200 to +200 sccm) should be used.

The AWM3100V operates using Honeywell’s microbridge thermal flow sensing technology. Key subsystems include: (1) Microbridge Sensing Element – a micro-machined silicon chip contains a central heating element and two thermopile temperature sensors positioned upstream and downstream; in zero-flow conditions, the symmetric temperature distribution produces equal signals from both thermopiles; when gas flows, it convects heat from the upstream sensor to the downstream sensor, creating a temperature differential proportional to the mass flow rate; (2) Signal Conditioning – an on-chip ASIC amplifies the differential thermopile signal, applies temperature compensation based on the ambient temperature measured by the heating element resistance, and produces a linear 1-5V output; the output voltage follows VOUT = 1V + (4V x FLOW/200sccm); (3) Temperature Compensation – the heating element resistance varies with ambient temperature; the ASIC uses this information to adjust the output, maintaining accuracy over the -25 to +85C range; (4) Linearization – the raw thermopile signal has a non-linear relationship to flow rate (approximately square-root at higher flows); the ASIC applies digital linearization to produce a linear 1-5V output; (5) Response Time – the small thermal mass of the microbridge element allows the sensor to respond to flow changes in approximately 1ms, much faster than traditional thermal mass flow sensors with larger sensing elements.
