The ATMEGA16A-PU from Microchip is a low-power CMOS 8-bit microcontroller based on the AVR enhanced RISC architecture. By executing powerful instructions in a single clock cycle, the ATMEGA16A achieves throughputs approaching 1 MIPS per MHz, allowing system designers to optimize power consumption versus processing speed. The AVR core combines a rich instruction set with 32 general purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU, allowing two registers to be accessed in one instruction cycle. The device features 16KB of In-System Self-Programmable Flash, 1KB SRAM, and 512 bytes of EEPROM. The 8-channel 10-bit ADC supports both single-ended and differential input modes with programmable gain at 1x, 10x, or 200x. A JTAG interface provides on-chip debug capability and allows programming of Flash, EEPROM, fuses, and lock bits. The -PU suffix denotes the 40-pin PDIP through-hole package, ideal for prototyping and educational use.

The ATMEGA16A-PU operates as a modified Harvard architecture 8-bit RISC microcontroller. (1) AVR Core: The CPU fetches 16-bit instructions from Flash and executes most in a single clock cycle. The 32 general-purpose registers are directly connected to the ALU, allowing single-cycle register-to-register operations without an accumulator bottleneck. A 2-cycle hardware multiplier supports 8×8=16-bit multiply. (2) Memory: The Harvard architecture separates program memory (Flash) and data memory (SRAM + EEPROM + I/O registers). The Flash supports In-System Programming (ISP) and Read-While-Write self-programming through a boot loader section. (3) ADC: The 10-bit successive approximation ADC uses a switched-capacitor architecture with sample-and-hold, converting in 65-260us depending on prescaler setting. Differential channels with programmable gain amplify small signals before conversion. (4) JTAG: The IEEE 1149.1 compliant JTAG interface provides boundary-scan testing and a full on-chip debug system that does not consume any user resources, enabling real-time breakpoints and variable monitoring.
