The AT89S8253-24AU from Microchip Technology is a low-power, high-performance CMOS 8-bit microcontroller with 12KB of In-System Programmable (ISP) Flash and 2KB of EEPROM data memory. Compatible with the industry-standard MCS-51 instruction set and pinout, it supports ISP programming through an SPI serial interface for convenient in-field firmware updates. The enhanced SPI features double write/read buffering for faster data throughput. With a programmable watchdog timer, dual data pointer, and x2 clock option, it provides a flexible and cost-effective solution for legacy 8051 applications.

The AT89S8253-24AU implements the MCS-51 architecture with 256 bytes of internal RAM and 32 I/O lines. The ISP Flash is programmed through the SPI interface in byte or page mode (64 bytes/page for code, 32 bytes/page for data). The enhanced SPI interface uses double buffering: a write buffer allows continuous data streaming without waiting for the shift register to complete, and a read buffer holds the previous byte while the next is being shifted in. The dual data pointer (DPTR0/DPTR1) accelerates memory block operations. The x2 clock option doubles the effective execution speed by running the CPU at twice the oscillator frequency, reducing EMI by allowing a lower crystal frequency.
