The ADXL346ACCZ-RL7 is a 3-axis digital accelerometer from Analog Devices with 16-bit resolution and selectable ranges from +/-2g to +/-16g. Featuring SPI and I2C digital interfaces, a 32-level FIFO buffer, and programmable activity/inactivity/tap detection, this device provides comprehensive motion sensing in a tiny 3x3x1mm LGA package. The 40uA measurement mode current and 0.1uA standby current preserve battery life in portable applications.

The ADXL346 uses a polysilicon surface-micromachined structure built on top of a silicon wafer. The structure features a proof mass suspended by polysilicon springs. Acceleration deflects the proof mass, changing the capacitance between the proof mass and fixed plates. A delta-sigma ADC converts the capacitance change to a digital value. The 32-level FIFO can store data samples to reduce the frequency of host processor reads. Built-in algorithms detect activity, inactivity, free-fall, and tap events, generating interrupts to wake the host processor.
