The ADUM1411BRWZ from Analog Devices is a quad-channel digital isolator based on iCoupler technology combining high-speed CMOS with monolithic air-core transformer technology. The ADuM1411 configuration provides three forward channels and one reverse channel, supporting bidirectional communication across the isolation barrier. The BRWZ version supports data rates up to 10Mbps with propagation delay of 40ns typical and pulse width distortion of only 5ns. Both sides operate from 2.7V to 5.5V, enabling voltage level translation. A programmable default output pin allows the user to define the output logic state when input power is absent. The patented refresh feature ensures DC correctness even without input logic transitions. The device consumes 1/6 to 1/10 the power of optocouplers at comparable data rates.

The ADUM1411BRWZ uses Analog Devices iCoupler technology to transfer digital signals across a galvanic isolation barrier. (1) Transformer Isolation: Microscale air-core transformers fabricated in planar thin-film technology couple high-frequency carrier signals between the input and output sides. The 2500Vrms isolation is achieved by the physical separation and insulation between transformer windings. (2) Signal Encoding: Input logic transitions are encoded into short pulses that drive the primary winding of the isolation transformer. The secondary winding receives the pulses and decodes them to reproduce the input signal on the isolated side. (3) Refresh: In the absence of input transitions, a periodic refresh pulse is transmitted every 2us to maintain the correct output state, ensuring DC correctness. (4) Default Output: The CTRL1 and CTRL2 pins define the output state when input power is lost, providing a known safe state during power-up and power-down. (5) Level Translation: Since VDD1 and VDD2 can be independently set from 2.7V to 5.5V, the device performs voltage level translation across the isolation barrier.
