The AD9221ARSZ-REEL is an Analog Devices 12-bit 1.25 million samples per second (MSPS) analog-to-digital converter in a 28-pin SSOP (RS) package with tape-and-reel packaging. The device operates from a single 5V supply and consumes 250mW, providing an efficient solution for medium-speed data acquisition. The 72dB signal-to-noise ratio delivers 11.5 effective bits of performance at the rated sampling frequency. The on-chip track-and-hold amplifier has a 280MHz full-power bandwidth, allowing direct digitization of wideband signals. The internal 2.5V reference with ±0.5% initial accuracy simplifies external circuit design. The parallel CMOS output interface provides 12-bit data with standard digital timing for easy interfacing to DSPs, FPGAs, and microcontrollers. The AD9221 uses a multi-stage pipelined architecture that achieves 1.25MSPS throughput with moderate power consumption. The REEL suffix denotes tape-and-reel packaging for automated assembly.

The AD9221 uses a multi-stage pipelined architecture consisting of four 3-bit stages followed by a 4-bit flash ADC. Each pipeline stage performs a coarse quantization, converts the digital code back to analog with an internal DAC, subtracts this from the held input, amplifies the residue, and passes it to the next stage. The digital outputs from all stages are combined and error-corrected using redundant bits (1-bit overlap between stages) to produce the final 12-bit output. The pipelined architecture achieves high throughput because each stage processes a different sample simultaneously, like an assembly line. The 280MHz track-and-hold amplifier samples the input at the rising edge of the encode clock. The on-chip reference provides the 2.5V voltage that defines the ADC input range (0 to 2V or 0 to 5V with external scaling). The 250mW power consumption is primarily in the analog pipeline stages and the internal reference buffer.
