The UCC28600DR from Texas Instruments is an 8-pin quasi-resonant flyback green-mode PWM controller designed for energy-efficient off-line power supplies. The quasi-resonant (QR) operation ensures the power MOSFET switches on at the valley of the drain voltage resonance, dramatically reducing switching losses and EMI. The green-mode feature automatically reduces the switching frequency at light loads and enters burst mode at very light loads, achieving less than 50mW no-load power consumption. The 25uA maximum start-up current minimizes standby power loss through the start-up resistor. The 1A sink / 0.75A source TrueDrive gate drive output can directly drive large MOSFETs without an external driver. The STATUS pin can disable an external PFC stage during green-mode operation, further reducing system standby power. The device integrates comprehensive protection including line OVP, load OVP, over-temperature, cycle-by-cycle power limit, and primary-side over-current hiccup restart.

The UCC28600DR operates in three modes depending on the feedback voltage (VFB). When VFB is between 2.0V and 4.0V, the controller operates in quasi-resonant (QR) mode where the MOSFET turns on at the first resonant valley after transformer demagnetization, minimizing turn-on losses. The CS pin voltage is commanded between 0.4V and 0.8V, providing peak current mode control. When VFB drops to 1.4V-2.0V (medium load), frequency foldback mode reduces the switching frequency from 130kHz down to 40kHz by clamping the oscillator peak voltage. When VFB drops further to 0.5V-1.4V (light load), green-mode operation clamps the frequency at 40kHz minimum. When VFB reaches 0.5V, OUT pulses are terminated (burst mode) until VFB rises to 0.7V, creating hysteretic on/off control. The STATUS pin becomes high-impedance during green mode, turning off the external PFC bias transistor to save power. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limit via the CS pin, line OVP detected through the OVP pin impedance during MOSFET on-time, and internal thermal shutdown at approximately 160C.
