The device integrates a 19mOhm high-side and 7mOhm low-side MOSFET, providing high-efficiency power conversion up to 96% from a 3V to 15V input rail. The D-CAP control mode enables fast transient response with no external compensation network required, simplifying design. The switching frequency is programmable from 250kHz to 1MHz via a single external resistor, allowing optimization for efficiency or size. The Auto-Skip Eco-mode reduces switching frequency at light loads to maintain high efficiency, while forced continuous conduction mode is also selectable via the MODE pin. The 0.6V reference with 1% accuracy ensures precise output voltage regulation. The integrated boost switch eliminates the need for an external boot diode. The device features internal soft-start with four selectable durations, prebias startup capability, and comprehensive protection including adjustable overcurrent limit, over-voltage, under-voltage, UVLO, and over-temperature shutdown.

The TPS53315RGFT uses TI’s D-CAP (Direct Control with Adaptive On-Time) control mode, which is a constant on-time architecture with adaptive on-time adjustment to maintain a pseudo-fixed switching frequency. When the output voltage drops below the reference, the controller triggers an on-time pulse whose duration is proportional to VOUT/VIN, maintaining the target frequency. The low-side MOSFET is turned on during the off-time, creating a synchronous buck converter. The D-CAP mode provides inherently fast transient response because there is no error amplifier compensation network to limit the bandwidth; the output voltage ripple provides the feedback signal directly. In Auto-Skip Eco-mode, when the inductor current reaches zero at light loads, the low-side MOSFET is turned off to prevent negative inductor current (discontinuous conduction mode). The switching frequency then decreases proportionally with load current, reducing switching losses. The adaptive zero-crossing circuit optimizes the low-side FET turn-off timing to minimize body diode conduction. The overcurrent limit is set by an external resistor on the ILIMIT pin, which programs a reference voltage for the current sense comparator. When the voltage across the low-side MOSFET exceeds this threshold during the off-time, the controller skips on-time pulses to limit the output current.
