The TPS82130SIL from Texas Instruments is a complete 3A step-down DC-DC converter in a 3.0 x 2.8 x 1.5 mm MicroSiP power module that integrates the switching regulator IC and the inductor into a single package. The integrated inductor eliminates the most space-consuming external component and simplifies the PCB layout, requiring only input and output capacitors plus a feedback resistor divider to complete the design. The 3V to 17V input range supports a wide variety of bus voltages including 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and 15V. The 0.9V to 6V adjustable output covers common FPGA, MCU, and DDR supply voltages. The 2MHz switching frequency allows the use of small ceramic input and output capacitors while maintaining high efficiency. The DCS-Control topology provides fast transient response with seamless transition between PWM mode (heavy load) and power save mode (light load). The 20uA quiescent current in power save mode minimizes battery drain in always-on applications. The 100% duty cycle capability allows the output to track the input voltage with minimal dropout, maximizing usable battery capacity.

The TPS82130SIL uses TI’s DCS-Control (Direct Control with Seamless transition) topology, which is a proprietary control scheme that combines the advantages of voltage-mode and current-mode control. In PWM mode (heavy load), the device operates at a fixed 2MHz switching frequency with pulse-width modulation, providing low output ripple and predictable EMI behavior. The high-side MOSFET is turned on for the on-time (determined by VIN, VOUT, and fSW), during which inductor current ramps up linearly. When the high-side MOSFET turns off, the low-side synchronous MOSFET turns on and inductor current ramps down. The output voltage is sensed through the FB pin and compared with the internal 0.9V reference. In power save mode (light load), the device reduces the switching frequency and operates with single pulses, drawing only 20uA quiescent current from the input. The transition between PWM and PSM is seamless with no output voltage discontinuity. The 100% duty cycle mode is entered when VIN approaches VOUT: the high-side MOSFET is held on continuously, and the output follows VIN minus the RDS(ON) drop of the high-side FET and inductor DCR. The power-good (PG) comparator monitors the FB voltage and asserts (open-drain goes high-impedance) when the output is within 10% of the target.
