The TPS82084SILT from Texas Instruments is a 2 A micro-module DC-DC step-down converter in an ultra-compact 2.8 x 3.0 x 1.2 mm BGA-9 package with an integrated 0.47 µH inductor. The device accepts 2.4 V to 5.5 V input and provides an adjustable output from 0.8 V to VDD at up to 2 A. By integrating the inductor and requiring only two external ceramic capacitors, the TPS82084 delivers the smallest complete DC-DC solution footprint available. The 2.4 MHz switching frequency supports the use of small multi-layer ceramic capacitors while maintaining high efficiency up to 95%. The device automatically transitions between PWM mode for heavy loads and power-save mode (PFM) for light loads, maintaining high efficiency across the full load range. The output voltage soft-start prevents inrush current, and overcurrent and thermal shutdown protections ensure robust operation.

The TPS82084SILT is a synchronous buck converter with integrated MOSFET switches and a 0.47 µH chip inductor inside the BGA-9 package. The current-mode control loop modulates the high-side switch duty cycle to regulate the output voltage. At moderate to heavy loads, the device operates in fixed-frequency PWM mode at 2.4 MHz. At light loads, it enters power-save mode where switching pulses are skipped to reduce switching losses and maintain high efficiency. The integrated inductor eliminates the need for external inductor selection and layout optimization, simplifying design and ensuring reliable operation. The internal compensation is optimized for the integrated inductor value, eliminating external compensation components. The soft-start circuit ramps the output voltage gradually to limit inrush current.
