The TPS76301DBVR from Texas Instruments is a low-power 150 mA low-dropout linear regulator in a compact 5-pin SOT-23 package. The adjustable output version allows the output voltage to be set from 1.5 V to 6.5 V using an external resistor divider with the 1.192 V internal reference. The device features a low dropout voltage of 300 mV at full 150 mA load, enabling efficient operation even when the input-to-output differential is small. The enable (EN) pin allows the regulator to be placed into a low-power shutdown mode drawing only 1 uA maximum, making it suitable for battery-powered systems where power conservation is critical. The quiescent current during normal operation is just 85 uA typical, and the device provides 60 dB power supply rejection ratio at 1 kHz, ensuring clean output voltage even from noisy input supplies. Protection features include overcurrent limiting, thermal shutdown, and reverse polarity protection.

The TPS76301DBVR operates through three functional blocks: (1) The bandgap reference generates a precise 1.192 V that serves as the internal reference. The FB (feedback) pin senses the output voltage through the external resistor divider, and the error amplifier compares the divided voltage with the reference to regulate the output. The output voltage is calculated as VOUT = 1.192 x (1 + R1/R2). (2) The pass transistor is a P-channel MOSFET controlled by the error amplifier. When the output voltage drops below the target, the amplifier reduces the gate drive, increasing the pass transistor current to restore regulation. The dropout voltage of 300 mV at 150 mA represents the minimum headroom required for proper regulation. (3) The enable circuit toggles the regulator between active and shutdown modes. When EN is driven below 0.5 V, the pass transistor is turned off and the supply current drops to 1 uA. When EN is above 2 V, normal regulation resumes. Protection circuits include current limiting that restricts output current to a safe level during overload and thermal shutdown that disables the output when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 160°C.
