The KSZ8863RLL from Microchip Technology is a highly integrated 3-port managed Ethernet switch IC. The RLL variant provides two copper 10/100BASE-T/TX PHY ports and one RMII host-side MAC interface, making it ideal for adding Ethernet switching capability to a processor-based system. The managed switch features include QoS with 4 priority queues and IPv6 classification, 802.1Q VLAN support, Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), and per-port rate limiting — features typically found only in larger enterprise switches. The internal LDO allows operation from a single 3.3V supply. The energy detect mode automatically powers down idle PHY ports, and the bypass mode maintains switch operation when the host processor is in sleep mode, reducing overall system power consumption.

The KSZ8863RLL integrates three switch ports connected through an internal non-blocking switch fabric with shared packet buffer memory. The two copper PHY ports include 10/100BASE-T/TX transceivers with integrated MDI termination resistors and auto-MDIX crossover capability. The RMII port connects to the host processor’s MAC through a reduced-pin-count MII interface at 50MHz (100Mbps) or 5MHz (10Mbps). Incoming packets are stored in the shared buffer, classified by the QoS engine (based on 802.1p, DSCP, or IPv6 priority), and forwarded to the destination port(s) based on the MAC address table (self-learning with up to 1K entries). The management interface (SPI, I2C, or SMI) allows the host to configure VLANs, QoS policies, RSTP parameters, and read MIB counters. The internal LDO generates the 1.2V core supply from the 3.3V input, simplifying the power supply design.

The KSZ8863RLL is used in VoIP desk phones where the two copper ports daisy-chain the PC connection through the phone, and the RMII port connects to the VoIP processor. In industrial Ethernet, the managed features (RSTP, VLAN, QoS) enable deterministic communication for factory automation. For set-top boxes, the switch provides one port for the WAN uplink and one for the home network, with the RMII connecting to the SoC. The bypass mode allows the processor to sleep while the switch continues forwarding packets between the two copper ports, saving power in always-on applications.
