The GB rank specifies a current transfer ratio (CTR) of 100% to 400% at IF=5mA and VCE=5V, ensuring reliable signal transfer across the isolation barrier. With a collector-emitter voltage rating of 80V and a maximum collector current of 50mA, the TLP291GB can directly drive small loads or interface with logic circuits. The wide operating temperature range of -55 to +110 C makes it suitable for demanding industrial environments. The TLP291GB operates as an optically coupled signal isolator. Key subsystems include: (1) Infrared LED – the input side consists of a GaAs infrared emitting diode; when forward current (IF) flows through the LED, it emits infrared light with a typical forward voltage of 1.25V at 5mA; the maximum continuous forward current is 50mA; (2) Phototransistor Detector – the output side contains an NPN phototransistor that is optically coupled to the LED through a transparent isolation medium; incident infrared photons generate base current in the phototransistor, which is then amplified by the transistor’s current gain; the resulting collector current (IC) is proportional to the LED forward current through the current transfer ratio (CTR); (3) Optical Isolation – the LED and phototransistor are physically separated by an isolation barrier providing 3750Vrms minimum dielectric strength; this ensures electrical safety and noise immunity between input and output circuits; (4) CTR (Current Transfer Ratio) – the GB rank specifies CTR of 100% to 400% at IF=5mA, VCE=5V; this means the output collector current is 1 to 4 times the input LED current under specified conditions; CTR varies with LED current, ambient temperature, and device aging.
