The TLP291 from Toshiba is a phototransistor-output optocoupler housed in a compact SO4 surface-mount package. It combines a GaAs infrared LED with a silicon phototransistor to provide galvanic isolation up to 3750Vrms. Designed for high-density PCB mounting in switching power supplies, PLCs, and communication interfaces. Wide operating temperature range of -55 to 110°C and comprehensive safety certifications (UL1577, cUL, VDE, CQC). The BL-TP,SE(T suffix denotes tape-and-reel packaging with the BL CTR rank (200-400% at IF=5mA).

The TLP291 operates by converting an electrical input signal to light using a GaAs infrared LED, then back to an electrical signal via a silicon phototransistor. When forward current flows through the LED (pins 1-2), it emits infrared light detected by the phototransistor (pins 3-4), causing collector current to flow proportional to the LED current. The current transfer ratio (CTR) defines this proportionality, with the BL rank offering 200-400% at IF=5mA. The optocoupler provides galvanic isolation between input and output circuits, with the internal isolation barrier rated at 3750Vrms for one minute.
