Applications
The TGL2201-SM from Qorvo (formerly TriQuint Semiconductor) is a 2-12 GHz dual-stage VPIN (Vertical PIN) limiter designed to protect sensitive receiver front-end components from high-power signals. The dual-stage architecture provides superior limiting performance with low insertion loss under small-signal conditions and fast limiting action when high-power signals are present. The device maintains >10dB return loss across the full bandwidth, and the DC-blocked input and output simplify system integration by eliminating the need for external blocking capacitors. Recovery time is under 1us, making it suitable for pulsed radar applications.
The TGL2201-SM operates as a dual-stage VPIN diode limiter. (1) Under normal (low-power) conditions, the VPIN diodes are in their high-impedance state, and the limiter presents low insertion loss (<1dB) to the passing signal. The signal passes through with minimal attenuation, preserving receiver sensitivity. (2) When a high-power signal arrives, the RF voltage drives the VPIN diodes into conduction, creating a low-impedance path to ground that reflects and absorbs the excess power. The first stage provides coarse limiting, while the second stage provides fine limiting to reduce the leakage to safe levels (<15dBm). (3) After the high-power signal is removed, the stored charge in the PIN diodes dissipates, and the diodes return to their high-impedance state. The recovery time of <1us is determined by the PIN diode carrier lifetime.
