The TBD62083AFWG from Toshiba is an 8-channel DMOS (Double-Diffused MOS) transistor array designed as a modern replacement for traditional Darlington driver arrays like the ULN2803A. Unlike Darlington arrays that use bipolar NPN transistor pairs with high saturation voltage (typically 1.1-1.6V), the TBD62083A uses DMOS output transistors that provide significantly lower on-resistance and saturation voltage, resulting in lower power dissipation and higher efficiency. Each of the 8 channels can sink up to 500mA with a 50V output sustaining voltage, making the device suitable for driving relays, solenoids, stepper motors, and LED displays. The built-in clamp diodes on each output provide protection against inductive kickback when switching relay coils and motor windings. The input stage is compatible with 2.5V to 25V logic signals, covering both TTL/5V CMOS and higher-voltage control interfaces. The DMOS technology also provides much faster switching speeds (0.4us turn-on, 0.8us turn-off) compared to Darlington arrays (typically several microseconds), and lower output leakage current (1uA max vs. 50-100uA for Darlington). The PSOP-18 package (pin-compatible with SOP-18 ULN2803A) enables drop-in replacement in many applications. The TBD62083AFWG is pin-compatible with the TD62083AFG Darlington version, allowing easy upgrade to DMOS technology.

The TBD62083AFWG operates as an 8-channel open-drain DMOS sinking driver. Key subsystems include: (1) DMOS Output Stage – each channel uses an N-channel DMOS transistor as the output switch; when the input is driven above the threshold (2.5V minimum), the DMOS transistor turns on and sinks current from the load to ground; the DMOS on-resistance is much lower than a Darlington pair, resulting in lower saturation voltage and power dissipation; (2) Input Stage – a level-shifting input circuit converts the logic-level input to the gate drive voltage for the DMOS transistor; the 2.5V minimum input voltage is compatible with 3.3V and 5V logic; the 0.6V maximum off-threshold ensures clean turn-off; (3) Clamp Diodes – each output has an integrated diode from the output to the COM pin; when an inductive load generates a flyback voltage spike, the clamp diode conducts, shunting the energy to the COM supply; the COM pin connects all diode cathodes and should be tied to the load supply; (4) Common Pin – the COM pin serves as the common connection for all 8 clamp diodes; it must be connected to the positive supply of the loads to provide a return path for inductive kickback current; (5) Low Leakage – the DMOS output has very low off-state leakage (1uA max at 85C), compared to Darlington arrays that have 50-100uA leakage due to collector-base leakage amplified by the Darlington current gain.
