The STCS1PUR from STMicroelectronics is a BiCMOS constant current LED driver that replaces discrete component solutions for driving LEDs from low-voltage sources (5V, 12V, or 24V). The PUR suffix denotes the DFN-8 3x3mm package with tape and reel packaging. Current is set by a single external sense resistor (RF = 100mV / ILED) with +/-10% accuracy. The 100mV feedback voltage minimizes power dissipation in the sense resistor. Features include PWM dimming up to 50kHz, shutdown with less than 1uA current, and an open-drain diagnostic output that detects LED string disconnection.

The STCS1 operates through four subsystems: (1) Current Regulation: An internal MOSFET pass element regulates LED current by comparing the voltage across the external sense resistor (connected to FB pin) against a precision 100mV internal reference. The resulting current is ILED = 100mV / RF with +/-10% accuracy. (2) PWM Dimming: The PWM pin directly controls the main pass switch. When PWM is high, current flows to LEDs. When low, the switch opens. The 4us rise/fall time supports dimming up to 50kHz. The internal bias remains active during PWM off-time for fast response. (3) Diagnostic: When enabled, the DISC pin monitors the DRAIN voltage. If below 75mV (indicating LED string open), DISC pulls low to alert the system. (4) Thermal Management: The DFN-8 exposed pad provides 38 C/W RthJA, allowing up to 2W dissipation at 50C ambient.
