The ST3232BDR is a 3V to 5.5V powered EIA/TIA-232 and V.28/V.24 communication interface transceiver from STMicroelectronics. It features a proprietary low-dropout transmitter output stage that provides true RS-232 performance from 3V to 5.5V supplies. The dual charge pump requires only four small 0.1µF external capacitors. With 300µA supply current and data rates up to 400kbps, it is ideal for battery-powered and portable communication applications.

The ST3232BDR operates through three main subsystems: (1) Dual Charge Pump: Generates the positive and negative supply voltages needed for RS-232 output levels from a single 3V to 5.5V supply using two voltage doublers and external capacitors. The V+ output reaches approximately 2×VCC and the V- output reaches approximately -2×VCC. (2) Transmitter Section: Two driver channels convert TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 compliant output levels with a minimum slew rate of 6V/µs, supporting data rates up to 400kbps. (3) Receiver Section: Two receiver channels convert RS-232 input levels to TTL/CMOS logic levels with input hysteresis for noise immunity, accepting input voltages up to ±25V.
