The SN65C3221EPWR from TI is a single-channel RS-232 driver/receiver in TSSOP-16. Operates from 3-5.5V with integrated dual charge pump and 4 external 0.1µF capacitors. 1Mbps data rate with ±15kV IEC ESD protection on RS-232 pins. Auto-powerdown reduces current to 1µA when no valid RS-232 signal is detected. INVALID output indicates signal presence. E suffix denotes enhanced ESD, P suffix denotes TSSOP-16, W suffix denotes tape-and-reel, R suffix denotes reel packaging. Ideal for battery-powered RS-232 communication.

The SN65C3221E integrates a dual charge pump that generates ±5.4V from the 3-5.5V VCC supply, enabling RS-232 compliant output levels (±5V minimum) with only 4 external 0.1µF capacitors. The driver converts TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 levels, while the receiver converts RS-232 levels back to TTL/CMOS. The auto-powerdown feature monitors the receiver input — if no valid RS-232 signal (outside ±0.3V for >30µs) is detected, the driver output is disabled and supply current drops to 1µA. When a valid signal returns, the device automatically reactivates. The FORCEON pin overrides auto-powerdown (active high), and FORCEOFF forces shutdown regardless of signal state. The INVALID output is high when a valid RS-232 signal (>±2.7V or <30µs absent) is present.
