The SFH320FA-3-Z from ams OSRAM is a silicon NPN phototransistor in a TOPLED PLCC-2 package with 980nm peak sensitivity, 120-degree half-intensity angle, up to 650uA light current, and 50nA dark current for industrial and consumer optical sensing.

The phototransistor uses a silicon NPN structure where incident photons in the 750-1120nm range generate electron-hole pairs in the base-collector junction. The resulting photocurrent acts as base current, amplified by the transistor current gain (hFE) to produce a larger collector current. The 980nm peak wavelength matches common IR emitters for optimal coupling.
