The SA56004EDP from NXP Semiconductors is a dual-channel digital temperature sensor that communicates via I2C or SMBus interface. It simultaneously measures the local die temperature and the remote junction temperature of an external PNP transistor or diode-connected transistor (2N3906 recommended). The device provides plus/minus 1C accuracy for both the local and remote channels in the critical 25C to 125C range, with a remote accuracy of plus/minus 3C across the full -40C to +125C range. The default 11-bit resolution (0.125C) can be increased to 12-bit (0.0625C) for finer temperature granularity. Two independent open-drain alarm outputs (OS# and THERM#) enable flexible thermal management: OS# for software-polled over-temperature alerts, and THERM# for hardware-based thermal throttling or shutdown. Programmable threshold and hysteresis registers allow the alarm behavior to be tailored to the specific thermal management requirements of the system.

The SA56004EDP measures temperature using the ratio of forward voltage drops across a diode-connected PNP transistor at two different bias currents. The remote sensor circuit applies a high current (Ihigh) and a low current (Ilow) alternately to the external transistor and measures the resulting forward voltage difference, which is proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT). This delta-VBE measurement cancels out the transistor-specific forward voltage, making the reading independent of the individual transistor characteristics. The same principle is applied to an internal diode for local temperature measurement. The analog measurement is digitized by a delta-sigma ADC with 11-bit or 12-bit resolution. The I2C/SMBus interface provides read access to the temperature registers and write access to the configuration, threshold, and hysteresis registers. The OS# and THERM# comparators continuously compare the measured temperatures against the programmed thresholds and assert the alarm outputs when limits are exceeded.
