The PC357N3J000F from Sharp Microelectronics is a single-channel phototransistor optocoupler in a 4-pin mini-flat (SOP-4) surface-mount package. The N3 rank provides a current transfer ratio (CTR) of 200% to 400% at IF=5mA and VCE=5V, which is a high CTR suitable for applications requiring large output current from a small LED drive current. The 3750Vrms isolation voltage provides safe galvanic separation between the input and output circuits. The 80V VCEO rating is higher than the typical 30V-40V found in many SMD optocouplers, allowing direct connection to 24V industrial logic circuits. The 100mV maximum VCE(sat) at IF=1mA and IC=20mA ensures reliable saturation when driving logic inputs. The double transfer mold construction provides improved moisture resistance and reliability for flow soldering processes. The PC357N series is the high-CTR version of the popular PC357 family, with CTR ranks ranging from 50% (blank rank) to 600% (LGB rank).

The PC357N3J000F consists of an infrared LED (IRED) optically coupled to an NPN phototransistor in a single package. When forward current flows through the LED (IF), it emits infrared photons at approximately 940nm wavelength. These photons pass through the transparent dielectric isolation layer and strike the base region of the phototransistor, generating electron-hole pairs through photoelectric absorption. The photogenerated carriers create a base current (Iphoto = IF x CTR) that is amplified by the phototransistor’s current gain (hFE). The total collector current is IC = Iphoto x hFE = IF x CTR. The CTR of 200-400% means that for every 1mA of LED current, the phototransistor can sink 2-4mA of collector current. The high CTR is achieved through optical coupling optimization and a phototransistor with high hFE. The VCE(sat) of 100mV at IF=1mA indicates that the phototransistor is in saturation, with both the base-collector and base-emitter junctions forward-biased, providing a low impedance path between collector and emitter. The 3750Vrms isolation is maintained by the physical separation between the LED and phototransistor chips and the dielectric properties of the molding compound between them.
