The PC817C from Sharp (now available from multiple manufacturers including Everlight, Lite-On, and Renesas) is a 1-channel photocoupler with a gallium arsenide LED optically coupled to a silicon phototransistor. The C grade offers 200-400% CTR (Current Transfer Ratio) at IF=5mA, making it ideal for SMPS feedback loops where high gain is critical. Packaged in DIP-4 with 5000Vrms isolation.

The PC817C is a high-CTR photocoupler with 200-400% Current Transfer Ratio (C grade) at 5 mA LED current, providing 5000 Vrms electrical isolation between input and output. Widely used as the feedback isolation element in SMPS circuits paired with TL431, the high CTR ensures reliable feedback loop gain even at low LED currents. The industry-standard DIP-4 pinout is compatible with PS2501-1 and similar optocouplers.

The PC817C consists of a gallium arsenide infrared LED and a silicon NPN phototransistor separated by a transparent insulating medium. When current flows through the LED, it emits infrared light that is detected by the phototransistor base region, generating a base photocurrent. This photocurrent is amplified by the transistor’s hFE to produce the collector output current. The CTR of 200-400% means the output collector current is 2-4× the input LED current, providing ample gain for SMPS feedback loops. In a typical SMPS application, the TL431 shunt regulator drives the LED based on the output voltage error, and the phototransistor collector provides the feedback signal to the PWM controller across the isolation barrier.
