The MPX5500DP from NXP is a dual-port differential pressure sensor from the MPX5000 series, designed for measuring differential pressure up to 5500 kPa (800 psi) in demanding industrial and automotive applications. The device features on-chip signal conditioning and temperature compensation from -40 to +125C, providing a high-level analog output voltage proportional to the applied differential pressure. The dual-port design has two separate pressure ports (P1 and P2) allowing measurement of the pressure difference between two points in a hydraulic or pneumatic system. The case-isolated package ensures the sensor die is not in direct contact with the pressure media, improving chemical compatibility and reliability with harsh media. The integrated signal conditioning includes a thin-film resistor network that provides offset calibration, full-span calibration, and temperature compensation, eliminating the need for external calibration circuitry. The sensor uses NXP’s proven piezoresistive MEMS technology where a silicon diaphragm with implanted piezoresistive strain gauges deflects under pressure, changing the resistance values in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. The MPX5500DP is suitable for hydraulic pressure monitoring, engine test stands, compressor control, and industrial process applications requiring high-pressure differential measurement with robust environmental protection.

The MPX5500DP operates as a piezoresistive pressure sensor with integrated signal conditioning. Key subsystems include: (1) Piezoresistive Sensing Element – a silicon diaphragm with four ion-implanted piezoresistive strain gauges arranged in a Wheatstone bridge; when pressure is applied across the diaphragm (P1-P2), the diaphragm deflects, causing two strain gauges to compress and two to stretch, changing their resistance values and unbalancing the bridge; the bridge output voltage is proportional to the applied differential pressure; (2) Temperature Compensation – thin-film resistors on the same chip provide first-order temperature compensation; the resistors are laser-trimmed during manufacturing to minimize offset drift and sensitivity variation over the -40 to +125C range; (3) Signal Conditioning – additional thin-film resistors provide offset calibration and full-span calibration; the calibrated full-scale output is approximately 4.4V at 5V supply and 5500 kPa applied pressure; (4) Dual-Port Design – two separate pressure ports allow differential measurement; the P1 port is the positive (high) pressure side; the P2 port is the negative (reference) side; the sensor output is proportional to P1-P2; (5) Case Isolation – a stainless steel diaphragm and silicone oil transfer the pressure from the port to the sensing element; the sensor die is isolated from the pressure media, providing chemical resistance and preventing media contamination of the sensing element.
