The PCF85176H/1 from NXP Semiconductors is a versatile peripheral device that interfaces microcontrollers to a wide variety of LCD displays with low multiplex rates. It generates drive signals for any static or multiplexed LCD containing up to four backplanes and 40 segments. The device communicates via a 400kHz I2C-bus interface and features auto-incremented addressing, hardware subaddressing, and display memory switching. Internal LCD bias generation eliminates external components. Multiple devices can be cascaded for large LCD applications with up to 2560 segments. The very low supply current of 7uA makes it suitable for battery-powered applications.

The PCF85176H/1 operates as an I2C peripheral that receives display data from a master microcontroller and drives LCD segments and backplanes directly. The 40×4-bit display RAM stores the on/off state for each segment under each backplane configuration. The I2C interface supports auto-incremented addressing for efficient block data transfers. The internal bias generator creates the required LCD drive voltages with voltage-follower buffers for clean drive waveforms. The backplane and segment outputs generate the multiplexed AC drive waveforms needed to maintain LCD segments without DC bias. The device supports selectable multiplex rates (static, 2, 3, or 4 backplanes) and bias configurations (static, 1/2, or 1/3).
